About the Event
Dear AAA members, friends,
We are glad to invite you to an AAA talk on "The Archaeology of Durres (Dyrrachium): recent excavation of the late-antique city". The talk will be via Zoom, and is open to all but there will be an opportunity for AAA members to join a live screening in the Embassy of Albania (33, St. George's Drive, SW1V 4DG) followed by drinks in celebration of Diten e Flamurit and Christmas.
Dyrrachium was one of the most important cities in the Balkans with evidence of human activity dating back to Neolithic times. A Greek colony - Epidamnus - was founded there in 626 BC, and the city became the terminus for the Via Egnatia which stretched East towards Constantinople. Julius Caesar, Mark Antony and Pompey all had postings to this part of the Empire. In 48 BC, Dyrrachium was a key objective in the civil war between Caesar and Pompey.
Dr Brikena Shkodra Rrugia heads the Department of Late Antiquity and the Medieval Period at the Institute of Archaeology in Tirana; the main focus of her research is on the development of late-Roman cities. She was also engaged in a research project on the formidable fortification system which surrounded ancient Durres.
Our thanks to the Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of Albania, Her Excellency Mamica Toska.
We look forward to seeing you at this, our last event of the year. Our first event of 2024 is an illustrated talk on 18 January by Joni Vorpsi of the PPNEA (Protection and Preservation of the Natural Environment in Albania) on "The Bird Population of Albania". AAA members will receive further details.
Please RSVP to angloalbanian@gmail.com, stating whether you wish to attend in person, or would like to be sent the Zoom link.
Best wishes and Compliments of the Season,
Stephen
