About the Event
Dear Anglo-Albanian Association member and friends,
The AAA is pleased to invite you to its next event which will take place on Monday 26 June at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES), starting at 6pm London time.. This is a talk by Xan Smiley, Editor at Large of The Economist: the title of his talk is "Albania revisited: Xan Smiley, roving editor of The Economist, reports on Albania today". His aim is to give us his impressions of the general state of Albania.
SSEES is situated at 16 Taviton Street, London WC1H 0BW. Places are limited with priority given to AAA members, so do RSVP promptly if you wish to attend in person. You may also join the event via Zoom using this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83222743247?pwd=NXJWcjdVNUxyL1ZhUmN4V3haNk9NUT09.
In April 2023, Xan Smiley visited Albania for the first time in 30 years. His previous visit was with his late father, David Smiley, one of the first two British officers in the Special Operations Executive (SOE) to serve alongside Albania's guerrilla fighters, including Enver Hoxha, in 1943-44. On this recent occasion Xan met with Prime Minister Edi Rama, several other ministers, opposition leaders, prominent businessmen and journalists from across the political spectrum.
Xan Smiley will speak for around 45 minutes followed by Q and A, after which there will be refreshments.
Do come and join us to hear what is going on in today's Albania.
Every good wish,
Stephen Nash CMG
Chairman, Anglo-Albanian Association
