1922-2022: a centenary celebration of UK-Albanian bilateral relations - the AAA previews some of the events being planned to mark the centenary. These include a specially-commissioned TV documentary, 100 Years of British-Albanian diplomatic relations, produced by TVSH. This edition of the Gazette includes six items on a UK-Albanian theme.

 

Flag Day address to the AAA by the UK Ambassador to Albania, Alastair King-Smith.

 

Albania in British Museums and Collections - Carolyn Perry set out her ideas for a virtual exhibition of Albanian objects held by British museums.A Fresh Look at Albania - Phil Logoreci and Michael Gunn report on a half-day conference organised by John Grogan, former Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Albania, and the Albanian Embassy.  

 

Climb quickly, left handed or else - a story of World War II - Stuart Notholt tells the story of Air Gunner Sergeant Peter Twiddy who was killed when his plane crashed into Albanian mountains in October 1943.

 

Book review - John Watkins reviews Minarets in the Mountains: a Journey into Muslim Europe by Tharik Hussain.

 

Blood on the Page - Adam Yamey tells the story of Allan Chappelow, an early visitor to Albania and the Soviet Union, who was murdered in Hampstead in 2006.

 

Albanian Village Life - Isniq, Kosovo 1976 - a selection of photographs taken in and around Isniq in western Kosovo by the Swedish photographer Ann Christine Eek.

 

Pursuing the Albanian Dream: Language and Nation in Kosovo - Justin Eliott explains why in 1968, the Prishtina Linguistic Consultation decided to adopt literary Albanian as developed in Tirana as a sign of unity among all Albanians.

 

Film review - Fjoralba Miraka reviews Hive (2021) directed by Blerta Basholli. The film tells the story of Fahrije who tries to set up a business in the aftermath of the Kosovo war.

 

Dy Rrugët e Jepës (Two Roads of Life) - Jeffrey Charest examines Kolë Idromeno’s painting for evidence of “picture-recitation”, a form of entertainment first identified in India more than 2000 years ago.

 

Fortified Dwellings of the Albanian Clans - Michael Gunn explains how Albanians developed a variety of fortified dwellings to protect themselves from Ottoman attack.
