AAA Scanderbeg Event in London, 16th November 2018 - Stephen Nash previews the AAA’s celebration of Scanderbeg which will be held at the British Academy to mark the “Year of Scanderbeg”, the 550th anniversary of his death.

 

Reading Ismail Kadare - translator John Hodgson discusses the novels of Ismail Kadare.

 

Philately in Albania - Philatelist Rodney Oliver meets members of the Federation of Collectors of Albanian Stamps founded in 1991.

 

Exhibition review - Adam Yamey reviews The Currency of Communism at the British Museum which includes several examples of Albanian banknotes.

 

Film review - John Watkins reviews Skënderbeu (The Great Warrior Skanderbeg) (1953), a historical epic of the life of Scanderbeg directed by Sergei Yutkevich. The film was shown by the AAA in January 2018 to launch the “Year of Scanderbeg”.

 

Captain General - Michael Gunn questions Scanderbeg’s right to be called “Captain General of the Holy See”, a title allegedly conferred on him by Pope Calixtus III in 1457.

 

Tribute - Philip Logoreci remembers his father Anton, Head of the BBC’s Albanian Section from 1940 to 1974. After retiring, Anton wrote a history of Albania, The Albanians, Europe's Forgotten Survivors (1977).

 

Albanian Postage Stamps, Part 2 - Rodney Oliver describes Albanian stamps from 1990 to the present.

 

Exhibition review - Mimoza Ahmeti reviews an exhibition of Patricia Nugees’s antiquarian books about Scanderbeg at the National Historical Museum in Tirana. (This article was originally published in the Albanian newspaper MAPO and translated for the Gazette by John Hodgson).

 

Orosh - A Tale of Two Roads - John Watkins visits Orosh in Mirdita, once an important secular and spiritual centre with a Benedictine Abbey.


Film review - Fjoralba Miraka reviews Syri Magjik (The Magic Eye) (2005) directed by Kujtim Çashku. Set in 1997, the film centres on a photographer, Petro, who witnesses the death of a child in Gjirokastër and then tries to expose the true circumstances behind the death.   

 

Music review - Adam Yamey reviews a concert of Albanian music performed by the Kosovo Philharmonic Choir at the Church of St Mary-at-Hill in Billingsgate, London.
